Reindeer, NordicDomesticated Reindeer are found mainly in Northern Scandinavia, Russia and Iceland where they were introduced in the 18th Century. The last remaining reindeer in Europe are still found in parts of Southern Norway.

Females vary in weight between 60 and 170kgs and males weigh 100 to 318kgs. Both grow antlers which in the Scandinavian variety for old males fall off in December, young males in early Spring and for females in the Summer.

Reindeer hooves adapt to the seasons - in Summertime when the tundra is soft and wet the footpads become spongy to give extra traction. In the Winter the pads shrink and tighten, which exposes the hoof rim and enables the hoof to cut into the ice and crusted snow. This then prevents the animal slipping. It also enables them to dig down through the snow to reach their favourite food, a lichen named 'reindeer moss'.

A reindeer coat has two layers of fur, a dense woolly undercoat and a longer haired overcoat which consists of hollow, air filled hairs.
