Jack Rabbit

Jack RabbitJack Rabbits are so named because their ears resemble those of a jack ass  (a male donkey).  However the word ‘Rabbit’ could be a little misleading as Rabbits are burrowers and Jack Rabbits are not – they live above ground.

Jack rabbits live on desert plateaux and grasslands in Northern Mexico and Western United States. They have a grey / brown coat and have white markings around their eyes, on the backs of their ears and on their foreheads. Their black tipped ears are 4-5" long which, considering the overall size of this animal, is quite long. Fully grown jack rabbits can measure 15-20" long and another 2-4" can be added for the length of its black tipped tail. They weigh around 7lbs.

One of their most famous characteristics is their ability to run at very fast speeds. When being chased from a stand-still they begin by taking a series of high long leaps and it's said that few dogs can catch them.

The Summer diet for this animal is tender grass but in very dry periods it will eat cacti. In Wintertime its diet switches to buds and bark.

The gestation period for jack rabbits is about one month and litters of one to six little ones are born fully covered with fur and open eyes.

Jack Rabbits are shy little fellows and the posture of this one suggests at a moment’s notice he will be up and running.  However, if you can give him a good home he could possibly be persuaded to stay put in the comfy new surroundings you have on offer.
