Cheetah Cub, Sitting (Large)

Cheetah Cub, Sitting (Large) Cheetahs are carnivores and are the fastest living land animal. They can reach speeds of around 70-75mph, in short bursts, having the ability to accelerate from 0-64mph in just three seconds - faster than most supercars!

Cheetahs have a smallish head, a very deep chest and narrow waist. Their long tail acts as a steering aid and allows them to make sharp turns whilst running. Their paws have semi-retractable claws which provide good traction. They have a beautiful short tan coloured coat with black spots. Their underside is white and unspotted. They weigh between 88 and 140lbs and have a body length of 45"-53". Their tail can measure up to 33".

A Cheetah's diet consists of gazelle, impala and other mammals and they will also prey on young zebras, etc.

Cheetahs hunt in the early morning and evening during daylight hours, by vision and not scent. They stalk their prey and then give chase. However, if they do not manage to achieve a quick catch they give up on the attempt which results in a hunting success rate of 50%.

Female cheetahs produce up to nine cubs which remain with their mother for 13-20 months before striking out on their own. If they reach adult-hood they can have a maximum lifespan of around 12 years in the wild and 20 in captivity.

One final point... did you know that big cats normally roar and cannot purr but in the case of the Cheetah it can purr and cannot not roar?
