Meet our Meerkat Toys...

The meerkat or 'suricate' is small mammal and member of the mongoose family. Meerkats live in the Kalahari Desert in South Africa. They tend to hang around together in a 'mob' or a 'gang' and usually all the meerkats are brothers and sisters... they sound similar to Italian gangster families!

Our 2 meerkats, 'Monty' and 'Martha' live in the Kalahari Desert with their mum 'Gertie' and their 20 brothers and sisters. These cheeky little meerkats love spending their days playing and foraging for food. To make sure Monty and Martha are safe there is always a lookout, or sentry on guard, watching for any predators that could harm the gang. They must listen out for the call from the guard, if the guard starts to bark loudly or whistle it means there is potential danger.

Monty and Martha like to tuck into a supper of insects and to help them find insects to snack on they have their very own built in 'spear'. It is a very strong claw which is about 2cms long and they use this to dig for their prey. Monty particularly likes to eat lizards, snakes, and millipedes amongst other things. Sometimes he shares his catch with his brothers and sisters... but other times he just likes to keep all his food to himself!

There are some new additions to Monty and Martha's family - Gertie has recently had 4 pups.

These little babies need to learn to use their tales to help them balance when standing upright. Like all meerkats each little baby has their very own build in sunglasses - the black patches around their eyes which help to deflect the suns glare. Monty and Martha are the oldest in their family so that means they have to help Gertie by babysitting the new pups. These little pups will not leave the underground network until they are at least 21 days old. All the meerkats join the pups when night falls and they do not leave the underground network of tunnels until sunrise.
